The Beginning
UrbanDataLab was motivated by a very personal experience: searching for the ideal place to live for the own family. Instead of using a zip code, I wanted to filter locations according to their conversion potential and the structure of the neighborhood and search specifically for specific situations in the neighborhood. I had to realize that there was no solution for this. As a techie of the ETH with appropriate knowhow about statistics and geodata, the first prototype was built, which allows a new form of interpretation and filtering of options. With the time it became obvious that this personal need is also relevant for companies and helps them to integrate the location into their business strategy - the foundation stone for UrbanDataLab was laid.
Who we are
UrbanDataLab is a spin-off of ETH Zurich and is based on more than 15 years of experience in data-based analysis and modeling of spatial developments - both in practice and in research. Our goal is to make this knowledge easily accessible on a platform and thus enable users from different industries to make better and, above all, individual location decisions in the urban environment. We are convinced that we can help to use urban spaces more efficiently and, by capturing trends and needs of user groups, also create synergies - from residents, workers, planners and owners to commuters.

- You translate our data storage and processing requirements into state of the art database solutions, with a minimum of guidance.
- You give support to our clients and implement client-specific solutions in form of standardized API’s.
- You manage the security and users access to our infrastructure.
- You continuously evaluate alternatives and optimize the performance .
What we look for
- A University degree (Msc or PhD) in computer science or equivalent
- 3+ years of working experience with:
- PostgreqSQL/PostGIS and cloud-based storage solutions (AWS, Azure, GCP)
- API design, maintenance, documentation and testing (DjangoREST, WMS, WFS, WCS,etc.)
- Linux, BASH command line and admin experience.
- Docker, Kubernetes, Spark
- Experience with geoprocessing of spatial data (Vector/Raster) is a big plus
- Experience on geoserver, tileserver or similar spatial data backends a plus
- Advanced knowledge in at least one of these programming languages (Python, Java, R)
- Basic knowledge of machine learning concepts is a plus
- Excellent English skills, both written and spoken

What we look for
- «Solution finder» with the ability to think big and work in a team

- Applied machine learning for tabular data, e.g. with xgboost, catboost, random forests, deep learning etc.
- Traditional statistics and test, e.g. multivariate regression, discrete choice, t-test, etc
- Advanced knowledge of data science libraries in either R and/or Python: Data wrangling, visualization, machine learning
- Visualization and storytelling with real world data
- Experience in deployments of ML-models as API with testing routines is aplus
- Experience in distributed computing (e.g. via Spark), Docker and mlflow is a plus.

- Develop machine learning modules to be applied with real world spatiotemporal data
- Convert prototypes to products and implement them in a scalable environment
